Taisei picks OWC for floating offshore wind development in Japan

Renewable energy consultancy OWC has been awarded a two-years master services agreement (MSA) by Taisei Corporation to provide support for development of a floating wind project in Japanese waters.

TAISEI, who has been recently selected for the development project by NEDO, has been developing a full concrete compact semi-submersible floater as a next-generation technology for lower cost and strengthening the domestic supply chain.

Upon having signed the MSA, OWC will be supporting TAISEI on a various range of topics.

TAISEI acknowledges various challenges associated with developing concrete floaters including engineering, manufacturing methods, loading out, or operation and maintenance, which OWC will support under master service agreement on a request basis.

“We will support Taisei in demonstrating the advantages of concrete floaters, which are vital to scaling floating wind power in Japan,” says Masataka Nakagawa, OWC’s floating wind team leader in Japan.

OWC and TAISEI will cooperate to assist in the deployment of floating offshore wind in Japanese waters to meet Japan’s ambitious carbon neutrality by 2050 target and contribute to the development of 30 to 45 GW of offshore wind power by 2040.

“This partnership strengthens our commitment to advancing floating offshore wind technology in Japan, and this project can play a key role in achieving the country’s renewable energy goals,” adds Masataka Nakagawa.

OWC is part of Oslo-listed ABL Group ASA, a global consultancy group with a track record of supporting more than 330 offshore wind projects across 36 countries, making it a trusted partner in the development of renewable energy worldwide.

OWC has an established office in Tokyo since 2020, offering comprehensive engineering consultancy and technical advisory services to support offshore wind energy development. OWC specialises in supporting clients with market entry, technical studies, technical due diligence and project management.
