The Rise of the Renewable Sector in South Africa

South Africa is at the forefront of the renewable energy revolution of the African continent. As the country grapples with energy challenges like loadshedding, the transition to sustainable energy solutions has never been more critical.

In recent years, there has been a concerted push towards integrating wind, solar, and battery energy storage systems (BESS) to stabilise the grid and ensure a reliable power supply.

This shift is evident in South Africa’s 2019 Integrated Resource Plan, which aims to increase renewable energy’s contribution to 24.7% of the national energy mix by 2030. The Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) has also been instrumental in adding significant capacity to the grid through wind and solar projects, with recent Bid Windows 6 and 7 contributing additional megawatts to the national grid.

South Africa’s role in the energy transition doesn’t stop at the local level. The country’s ambitions extend to becoming a leader in green hydrogen production, further solidifying its position as a renewable energy hub for Africa.

OWC South Africa’s Contribution to the Hybrid Horizon

OWC is proud to play a vital role in South Africa’s renewable energy journey. We have been at the forefront of providing expert consultancy services to developers, guiding the development of onshore wind and solar projects, as well as hybrid energy systems. This approach ensures that energy generation can be diversified, with onshore wind farms supplemented by solar PV and battery storage solutions.

One of our key contributions to the region has been our work on energy yield assessments. Recently, OWC was appointed to provide approximately 1.5 GW of energy yield assessments for nine potential solar PV developments, alongside another 500 MW for two potential onshore wind farms. These projects are a testament to our expertise and commitment to driving South Africa’s renewable energy growth.
