Project summary:
OWC supported Stadtwerke München GmbH (SWM) with independent technical due diligence for its acquisition of a 25% stake in the Gennaker Offshore Wind Farm, a 976.5 MW fixed-bottom project being developed by Skyborn Renewables in the German Baltic Sea.
Gennaker is planned to comprise 63 Siemens Gamesa turbines and, at the time of construction, will be the largest offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea. From 2028, it is expected to supply clean, renewable electricity to around one million households annually.
The Hamburg-based team, supported by OWC specialists across its global network, assessed the project’s technical design, energy yield and performance assumptions, contractual and commercial risk allocation, environmental and regulatory position, construction strategy, operational readiness and lifecycle performance.
Project Challenges
SWM required an independent view of the technical risk before committing capital to a 25% minority stake in a major offshore wind project approaching construction.
Key challenges included:
Critically reviewing the investment case foundations, including design, programme, contractual and lifecycle assumptions.
Ensuring that turbine technology, foundations, grid, permitting, construction, operations, energy yield and cost interfaces were adequately covered.
Assessing the allocation of technical, contractual and commercial risks across the project.
Prioritising principal risks and identifying practical mitigations to support completion of the transaction.
The assessment also needed to provide a clear view of operational readiness and long-term lifecycle performance, alongside the project’s near-term construction and execution risks.
