USA Offshore Wind Lease Areas: A Geological Desktop Study by OWC
A deep-dive into ground conditions for Central Atlantic, Gulf of Maine and Oregon
By George Marling, Snr. Geotechnical Engineer, OWC USA
As the USA looks ahead to important offshore wind auctions in the Central Atlantic, Gulf of Maine and Oregon, a critical element in preparing your bid and in evaluating the feasibility of your project is having a comprehensive understanding of the ground conditions at the Wind Energy Areas (WEAs).
OWC’s US-based geoscience team have conducted an in-depth technical study into the geological conditions of offshore wind sites of the BOEM Lease Auction areas. This study integrates various publicly available geo-data sets, which form a high-level, wholistic view of the WEAs to support decision making, initial planning and bid-preparation for the upcoming auctions.

More on the study
For each location, OWC’s study considers:
- Overview seabed conditions
- Seabed sediments
- Expected soil profiles
- Metocean climate
- Concluding key considerations
“All OWF sites coming under the microscope this year in the USA differ greatly in terms of their ground conditions, geo risks and general environmental considerations. An in-depth understanding of the geological, seabed and sub-seabed conditions of each site is fundamental to the successful planning of a bid to the offshore wind auctions, and will likely be a key consideration in the feasibility of the proposed development plans. OWC’s geoscience team in the USA combines the global technical expertise with local market know-how to provide specialised studies to maximise your offshore wind success.”
