Vasilis Markatselis, Senior Consultant, OWC London
What do you do at OWC?
Over the past 4 years, I have specialised in market studies assisting developers with floating wind queries and with the identification of suitable site(s) for offshore wind developments.
I joined the company as a Senior Consultant with the Market Studies team. Our central mission in the Market Studies team is to provide detailed go-to-market assessments to our clients, supporting market entry decisions. These activities include offshore wind regulatory mapping, supply chain assessment and country screening to identify suitable sites for offshore wind developments ensuring high revenues and low development risks.
What inspired you to go into the field you are in?
Initially, love for the environment, then a general wonderment in how offshore wind, especially floating wind, can support a greener future and reduce carbon emissions.
My interest in floating wind stems primarily from Greece’s challenging water depths. Floating wind’s challenging nature – complex design, installation and operations procedures – is another driver. Although this technology has yet to reach commercial-scale deployment, there is significant appetite as new markets can leverage it and enter the offshore wind space.
What do you enjoy about working at OWC?
The variety of the day-to-day projects and the opportunity to apply my technical knowledge supporting projects worldwide. It is rewarding to being able to contribute to projects worldwide supporting developers’ targets. OWC gives the opportunity to work on projects regardless the location utilising leading expertise to provide solutions no matter the problem. Our team can provide detailed market analysis leveraging our local presence and existing relations with local consultants when needed.
What is the most exciting aspect of the energy transition for you?
Given my background, I was always interested in participating in challenging and innovative aspects. Therefore, it is the opportunity to consult developers regarding the challenges of floating wind and to provide solutions, including the selection of the most suitable floating wind concept(s) for specific project(s).
What do you enjoy in your spare time?
n my free time, I prefer spending time with family and friends. Also, I enjoy spending time outside playing basketball with friends or going for hiking. During winter, I also enjoy visiting ski resorts as I love snowboarding. Outside of the recreation activities, I love travelling and discovering new countries, places, cultures. This is something that I missed during Covid-19, but I hope to be able to plan new trips soon!
