OWC appointed to 15 MW Japanese floating wind project

Renewable energy consultancy OWC has been appointed by Japanese industrial and engineering company Kanadevia Corporation to provide pre-FEED (preliminary front-end engineering design) services for a 15 MW semi-submersible floating wind turbine offshore Japan.

The innovative floating offshore wind technology will be demonstrated under the subsidy of New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to commercialise floating offshore wind at cost competitive level internationally, which is essential to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 in Japan which have large areas of deep sea and requires floating offshore wind turbine.

OWC has supported Kanadevia since the initial stages of the project, having successfully collaborated during the Green Innovation Fund Phase 1, which involved basic design services for several times.

OWC’s role will focus on the first of several planned design iterations, with opportunities for the company to continue its support as the project progresses through its demonstration phases.

“This is an important floating offshore wind project for Japan. It represents a pivotal step in developing Japan’s floating offshore wind industry and reinforces our commitment to helping our clients succeed in achieving their renewable energy goals. With the complexity of the floater’s design and the scale of the project, we are proud to contribute to such innovative and forward-thinking work,” says Masataka Nakagawa, OWC’s floating wind team leader in Japan.

NEDO is a key component of Japan’s strategy to reduce the high cost of offshore wind power, with floating offshore wind technology playing a central role.

OWC is part of Oslo-listed ABL Group ASA, a global leader in energy and marine consultancy, with footprint in 42 countries and experience from more than 330 offshore wind projects.

OWC has an established office in Tokyo since 2020, offering comprehensive engineering consultancy and technical advisory services to support offshore wind energy development. OWC specialises in supporting clients with market entry, technical studies, technical due diligence and project management.
