This week, we chat with Dan Mattson, an Electrical Engineer and Senior Consultant with OWC Americas!
Position: Electrical Engineer / Senior Consultant, Renewables
Office: OWC Americas
Favourite Book: Anything Brandon Sanderson
Hobbies Outside of Work: I make stained glass and love playing board games.
Can you give us a glimpse into your day-to-day life at OWC?
I’m an electrical engineer working on wind, solar, and BESS projects.
My role is mainly focused on the early stages of development, where I support conceptual planning and technical assessments. This typically involves reviewing site layouts, specifying initial electrical equipment, determining appropriate cabling sizes, and running load flow models to understand how the system will perform under different conditions. I also collaborate with other engineers and project stakeholders to help ensure the designs are technically sound and ready to move into the next phase.

What inspired you to join your profession?
I’ve always been fascinated by electricity and how it powers almost everything around us — from the simplest devices to entire cities. That curiosity started early and never really went away, so pursuing a career in engineering felt like a natural path. It was the only option I seriously considered because it allowed me to combine that interest with problem-solving and real-world impact.
Can you share with us something exciting you are currently working on?

I’m currently working on several offshore wind farms in South Korea and Japan, which has been a great experience.
It’s exciting to be part of projects in different parts of the world and to contribute to the global transition to renewable energy.
Looking ahead, what do you think is key to driving sustainability in your region?
Looking ahead, I think clear and consistent policy support will be key to driving sustainability in my region. A stable regulatory environment helps build investor confidence and allows projects to move forward with greater certainty.
Besides work, what do you enjoy most working within the ABL Group?
I enjoy every chance I have to spend time with my ABL colleagues!
Whether it’s sailing on the Hudson River, making potions, or hanging out at a game arcade, every social day at the New York office is a good time
