Meet the Team: Byungchan Kim | OWC Korea
At OWC, our teams are constantly expanding, into more locations, in expertise and in sectors of influence, so that our people can truly drive safety and sustainability across our energy and oceans. Our people are at the heart of what we do, and we invite you to get to know our team members so you can meet the energy behind change.
As GWEC’s Wind Energy Summit begins – this week we meet Byungchan Kim, an engineering geoscientist based in our Seoul office. Byungchan will be on stand with the wider ABL Group, highlighting our market-leading geotechnical capabilities!
Position: Engineering Geoscientist
Office: OWC Seoul
Hobbies: Photography, driving, and listening to music (especially rock and blues!)
What does your day-to-day look like at OWC?
Currently, I have been kept very busy with our ongoing projects!
As I am more new to the engineering sector, I have been working hard but also taking enough time to soak up knowledge from my great team and learn as much as possible!
What inspired you to join your industry?
The development of a renewable energy market is highly necessary for Korea, especially if we are to meet our 2030 targets! I also am keen to see the Korean industry continue to mature and hopefully to meet (or even rival) European net-zero targets in the coming decades. I felt I had a great opportunity with OWC to join the fight against climate change and grow as a geoscientist – particularly as Korea focuses on offshore wind farm development!
Can you tell us about something exciting you are working on right now?
I am currently working on several exciting projects including an early stage geological desk study and ground modelling. It has been very interesting and I feel my work really helps to contribute to the success of my team, OWC Korea, and the wider Korean renewables industry!
What does the future look like in energy and oceans in Korea?
Historically, Korea has had a very strong civil construction sector. However, initial geological and geotechnical investigations haven’t been that commonplace in the past. In order to meet the challenges of today and the future-proof our renewable infrastructure, I believe OWC’s presence in Korea will be pivotal to the success of its sustainable energy development.
What do you enjoy most about working as part of OWC Korea?
I really enjoy being part of such a global company – which means my career and research opportunities are not just limited to Korea.
Why should people join OWC and the wider ABL Group at the Wind Energy Summit 2024 this week?
I believe OWC is far ahead of the curve in Korea and continues to deliver innovative, advanced solutions to our clients. We are looking forward to highlighting our market-leading services and emphasise our important role in the future of Korean energy!
