Job overview

The Principal Engineer will prospect and develop leads and convert consultancy assignment opportunities and work on and project manage potentially complex consultancy assignments for a range of renewables projects. S/he will manage project teams of multi-disciplined engineers needed to deliver our scopes of work, including both OWC and its associates.

The Principal Engineer will join OWC’s management team, sharing responsibility for meeting OWC’s ambitious business growth objectives. This will allow the successful candidate to shape the future of the engineering team and function within a growing and ambitious company.

Key responsibilities and duties

  • The Principal Engineer will have responsibility and be accountable for the OWC project engineering team’s development and performance. This can include the delivery of engineering deliverables as part of discrete assignments or supporting projects being delivered to clients in the renewables sector on a global basis, including potentially secondments.
  • The role is seen as key to developing new services, capabilities and tools, plus, engaging with OWC’s client base in direct sales and marketing engagements.
  • The role will also be client-facing whereby the successful candidate will expected to bring new work into the company using existing contacts and having the commercial acumen to bring in new work. All this will be done whilst at the same time developing the profile of the engineering team and managing the team within it. The successful applicant will be expected to work with and alongside the Business Development Director in developing and executing sales and marketing plans and activity.
  • It is vital that the Principal Engineer will ensure the continuous development of existing staff. The people management aspect of this role is vitally important, OWC has strength in its people and this objective must be carried forward.

The Principal Engineer shall also manage and develop the following business areas:

  • One of: onshore wind, solar PV, battery storage
  • Project management assignments
  • Develop and enhance OWC’s technical excellence with respect to engineering and project processes and services
  • Managing all resources at their disposal and then recognising any shortfall in resources and arrange for the team to be strengthened with either new FTEs or contractors depending on the nature of the work and the future backlog and pipeline projections
  • Ensure that engineering activities operate in accordance with all health, safety and environmental policies and procedures to guarantee the safety and wellbeing of staff, sub-contractors and any other third parties who may be impacted by our work.
  • Ensure work and technical quality standards are maintained and are consistent in the engineering group regardless of office/location.
  • Prepare budgets and forecasts for both the Engineering and Project Department and contribute to the overall OWC budgets for both the UK and all regional offices.
  • Monitor costs and performance to ensure compliance with budgetary targets and prepare reforecasts during the financial year.
  • Manage the engineering team in a way that results in a high retention rate, ensuring that all the team members have personal development plans and that they are developing in technical and communication skills required in a leading engineering consultancy.
  • The Principal Engineer will be heavily involved in the research and development work within the company. The Principal Engineer shall lead a team which shall evaluate opportunities on a return-on-investment basis, developing new methods and systems to give OWC a competitive technological and commercial advantage in the given business area
  • The Principal Engineer will also work closely with the Managing Director to ensure that technical compliance and lessons learns from previous projects are transferred to our major projects.
  • Author technical reports and present at conferences, showcasing OWC’s technical excellence; encouraging team to do likewise.
  • Liaise and work closely with the Business Development Director in both the planning and execution of sales and marketing activities.

Specific Requirements

  • The role is office based with flexibility to working hours. Occasional onsite attendance is expected; European and global travel as necessary

Qualifications

Essential

  • Qualified to degree standard in STEM subjects

Desirable

  • A Masters or PhD in a STEM discipline would be an advantage
  • Chartered member of a relevant professional institutional body

Work experience

Essential

  • At least 5 years’ experience of working in an engineering/ renewable consultancy with large projects, working on renewables or related project work.
  • Significant experience from the renewables sector, either from an organisation engaged in R&D, engineering and/or design
  • A successful track record of managing a large team of multi-discipline engineers
  • Experience in working in a site environment

  • Capable of being an ambassador for OWC’s technical excellence and represent and promote engineering capabilities within the wider ABL Group
  • Ability to co-ordinate, direct and lead projects and work under own initiative with minimum supervision
  • Proficient in MS Office packages
  • Excellent technical knowledge and experience of one of solar PV/onshore wind/battery storage
  • Excellent report writing skills
  • Familiar with commercial and contractual arrangements and able to provide guidance to OWC clients
  • Good sales and business development techniques
  • Project orientated with a keen interest and knowledge of the renewables industry
  • Project management experience
  • Understanding of technical and commercial aspects of renewable energy infrastructure projects (including project finance, M&A markets, regulatory/policy matters)

  • Expert in the use of one or more software: Matlab, Visual Basic, MathCAD, Homer, WindPro, PVSyst
