Principal Consultant – Offshore Wind (Deputy Country Manager)

Job overview

The Principal Consultant will lever their existing network to prospect and develop leads and convert consultancy assignment opportunities and work on and project manage consultancy assignments for a range of offshore renewables topics or problems. Manage the teams of multi-disciplined engineers needed to deliver our scopes of work, including both OWC and non-OWC staff.

Proofing the necessary competence and experience, the Principal Consultant might also support the Country Manager Poland as a deputy/interim manager. This includes ensuring efficient delivery and service to all internal and external customers, and giving the highest level of customer satisfaction, whilst in parallel, working together with the country manager, setting up the business in the region and achieving organic growth and financial success. The role will require close co-operation with entire management team and subordinates.

Key responsibilities and duties

Principal Consultant
  • Work as technical lead on projects to accomplish the overall delivery of optimum solutions to clients with the timeframe, costs and quality standards established
  • Represent OWC as a key domain expert, sharing knowledge and experience to support the wider development of competencies within OWC to enhance overall assignment execution to clients
  • Generate and prospect leads – Including representing OWC at conferences, seminars and meetings to establish business development leads and to market OWC to prospective clients
  • Follow up on leads to generate new work
  • Independently prepare tenders and proposals
  • Consult on all matters of offshore wind topics; such as project development, feasibility, procurement, construction, pre-FEED, O&M, Grid, etc. For instance, being able to review employers’ requirements, review as part of a due diligence assignment, lead work packages, advising on early development topics, development and realization phase projects
  • Responsible for keeping projects on budget and on schedule
  • Attend regular internal meetings and external / third party meetings as required
  • Ensure all deliverables are conducted in full compliance with approved instructions, procedures and policies
  • Manage multi-discipline teams of engineers (and other technical staff) in the completion of due diligence assignments for exacting clients
  • Maintain a consistently high degree of quality and technical excellence in all work product
  • Mentor and support less experienced team members
  • Identify and communicate relevant technological developments or regulatory changes which may impact the business or provide new opportunities
Deputy Manager
  • Work closely with other OWC Country Manager(s), Directors and Senior staff to ensure that technical compliance and lessons learns from previous projects across the network are transferred to our major projects
  • Management of organizational arrangements, systems and processes to enable the efficient and effective deployment of resources in line with and supporting the development
  • Producing consultancy/engineering deliverables as part of discrete assignments or supporting projects being delivered to clients in the offshore renewables sector on a global basis. In addition to management duties you will be expected to be on chargeable work at least 50% of your time. This is important to stay at the cutting edge of renewables deliverables
  • Responsibility for close control and management of sub-contractor qualification, quality, costs and performance
  • Support in developing gaining authorization and execute a national specific sales and marketing plan to achieve agreed revenue and profit objectives
  • Author technical reports and present at conferences, all designed to showcase OWC’s technical excellence. Encourage team to do likewise
  • Liaise and work closely with the OWC Business Development Director in both the planning and execution of sales and marketing activities
  • Ensuring all projects are well resources using a combination of local resources and where appropriate back-office support from other OWC or ABL offices
  • Establish and then maintain good client relationships with regular contact and checks on satisfaction with respect to service provision and delivery expectations
  • Ensuring strict adherence to the ABL and OWC HSEQ procedures and systems for all personnel

Specific Requirements

  • The role is office based with flexibility to working hours. Occasional onsite attendance is expected, together with the business-related trips

Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree qualified in an engineering discipline related to offshore renewable business

Desirable

  • MBA course or similar qualification

Work experience

Essential

  • More than 10 years work experience with engineering / renewables consultancy with large projects, working on offshore wind or renewables related project work
  • An experienced manager with commercial experience and clear evidence of managing a P&L within a business unit
  • Substantial operational experience within a consultancy or utility company

Desirable

  • Experience in the development, construction and operation of offshore wind projects.
  • Experience of conducting lenders technical advisor assignments.
  • Proven successful track record of identifying and converting opportunities into sales.
  • Project management qualifications.
  • Understanding of technical and commercial aspects of renewable energy infrastructure projects (including project finance, M&A markets, regulatory/policy matters)

Technical skills, knowledge and abilities

Essential

  • A strong commercial background in engineering consultancy in the renewables sector
  • Expert in the use of MS office package
  • Ability to co-ordinate, direct and lead projects and work under own initiative with minimum supervision
  • Excellent technical knowledge and experience of offshore wind farms with specialist knowledge of a relevant area of offshore wind development and construction
  • Excellent report writing skills
  • Familiar with commercial and contractual issues and able to provide guidance to OWC clients
  • Good sales and business development techniques
  • Project orientated with a keen interest and knowledge of offshore wind farm industry and project managements
  • The ability to establish effective business relationships with decision makers and to maintain professional network
  • A good communicator at all levels
